Health & Safety
There are two doctors and four dentists with office and homes in Corinth. Evergreen Health Center is a satellite of Glens Falls Hospital with three physicians and one physician's assistant on staff. They offer family and pediatric care, urgent care, laboratory and radiology services, and physical therapy. Saratoga Hospital and Glens Falls Hospital are within 15 miles of our village. There is 24 hour on call, fully certified paramedic volunteer Emergency Squad with five vehicles. They were organized in 1946 by eleven firemen who were taking the first aid course and saw the need for transportation of the sick or injured to the hospital or doctor. The Corinth Squad was the principle organizer of District 3 NYS Volunteer Ambulance and First Aid Assoc. and hosted the first state convention in 1956. There is a 24 hour on call volunteer Fire Department with dive and water rescue teams and equipment. The CFD was established on April 23, 1895 with a Village Board motion to purchase 1300 feet of hose, nozzles, couplings, and a cart. That June two companies were formed: Elixman Hose Co. in honor of Theodore Elixman, secretary of the Hudson Pulp and Paper Co. and The Warren Curtis Hose Co. for the general manager. The Ladies Auxiliary formed in 1937 to help firemen, victims, the needy, and the community.
The Corinth Police Department was dissolved in 2007 and currently the NYS State Police and Saratoga County Sheriff's Department service both the Town and Village of Corinth.
Government
The village of Corinth is governed by Mayor Brad Winslow and a village board of 4 trustees. The Town of Corinth is governed by Town Supervisor Richard Lucia and a Town Board of 4 councilmen. Both have Planning and Zoning Boards. The Adirondack Park Agency rules are in place in parts of hte Town. There is a community Master Plan and subdivision regulations and building codes are available at the Village and Town Halls. The community is growing and both governments face the challenge of responsible fiscal management while meeting the needs of the people, both young and old, for services and replacing an aging infrastructure.
Education
The earliest schoolhouse in the area was constructed of logs and erected in South Corinth. The first framed school was built in 1811 on Palmer Avenue. Because the nearest place for higher education was Glens Falls or Saratoga, in 1871 Rev. Rodney Andrews, a Baptist minister, opened a Corinth High School, offering languages and sciences. In 1885, a teacher for the winter term earned $5 a week. Voters approved a $20,000 bond issue to build a school on Oak Street in 1890 and in 1908, two new brick elementary schools were opened. One was on Main street and one was on Palmer Avenue. A new K-4 school was opened off Center Street in 1996. There are approximately 1300 students in K-12. Corinth Central School district has a 422 seat auditorium, lighted football field, softball and baseball fields, six tennis courts and an all weather track. The district offers a gifted and talented program, four year sequence in French and Spanish, vocation education program, college courses in collaboration with ACC, Syracuse, and Plattsburgh, adult and recreational programs. Several colleges are within a half hour of the village.
In 1947 in an effort to educate the people in the correct pronunciation of Corinth, a letter was written by concerned citizens, including the Town Supervisor, Mayor, school principal, post-master, librarian and sent to radio stations, newspapers and local organizations, "so we ask cooperation in using the preferred COR'inth."
